Adding AI to your product without losing control
What business leaders should ask before green-lighting chat, search, or automation powered by AI.

At a glance
Covers customer data, runaway bills, and going live with something customers trust—not just an internal demo.
Startups add AI features for support, search, codegen, or ops copilots. The integration work is less about picking a model and more about data flow, failure modes, and spend—especially when customer data is involved.
Start with use case and data class
Classify inputs: public docs, internal runbooks, customer PII, or transactional records. Each class implies different stores, retention, and whether fine-tuning is even appropriate. Most products should start with retrieval (RAG) over approved corpora—not sending full databases to an API.
Amazon Bedrock vs direct API providers
Bedrock keeps inference in your AWS account with IAM-controlled access—attractive for Indian teams already on AWS and negotiating data residency with customers. OpenAI or Azure OpenAI may fit if your team already standardized there. We often design a thin routing layer so you can swap models without rewriting product code.
RAG done minimally
- Ingestion pipeline with versioning—know which doc snapshot produced an answer.
- Chunking and metadata filters so agents search the right tenant or product line.
- Vector store matched to scale: OpenSearch Serverless, pgvector on RDS, or managed KB APIs.
- Eval set before launch: golden questions, expected citations, regression in CI where possible.
MCP and internal tools
Model Context Protocol servers expose Jira, CRM, or internal HTTP APIs as tools agents can call. Treat them like production microservices: authentication, rate limits, input validation, and audit logs. Never give an LLM credentials you would not give a junior engineer.
Cost and reliability
- Token budgets per user/session; cache embeddings and frequent queries.
- Fallback when the model times out—graceful degradation beats silent failure.
- Dashboards on latency, error rate, and cost per feature flag.
- Human review for high-risk actions (refunds, infra changes, external email).
Production AI is platform engineering plus product. OpsGrid helps teams spike, harden, and document that path—so your engineers own the next iteration.
