Cloud migration checklist for Indian SaaS teams
A cloud consultant should walk you through these steps before anyone moves a production database.

At a glance
Use before lift-and-shift or replatform decisions between on-prem, VPS, and AWS.
Migration projects fail when teams move VMs first and discover licensing, latency, or data residency later. A short checklist prevents expensive rollback.
Discovery
Inventory what actually runs production:
- Services, dependencies, batch jobs, and peak traffic windows.
- Data classes: PII, payments, health—each drives architecture.
- RTO/RPO per system (honest numbers, not aspirational).
Target architecture
Pick migration style per app: rehost, replatform, or refactor. Not everything belongs on Kubernetes. Many APIs land on ECS Fargate or Elastic Beanstalk first.
Cutover plan
Production moves need a reversible path:
- Dual-write or read-replica lag thresholds defined.
- DNS TTL lowered before cutover; rollback DNS documented.
- Post-cutover cost and error budgets watched for 72 hours.
Cloud consultants add value when they shorten this checklist into a dated plan with owners—not when they sell six months of vague “transformation.”
